Tracking Sleep, Transforming Learning: UWA and iyarn’s Groundbreaking Student Sleep Journal

In an exciting collaboration, iyarn has worked closely with UWA’s highly regarded Centre for Sleep Science to digitise a learning experience that’s helping students understand one of the most essential—and often overlooked—aspects of health: sleep.

Introducing the Sleep Journal

Developed for students in the new Waking Up to Sleep course at UWA, the Sleep Journal is a digital tool powered by iyarn’s platform. It allows students to track key daily behaviours such as:

  • Sleep duration and quality
  • Energy levels
  • Stimulant use
  • Daily routines

By engaging with this data through iyarn’s visual and interactive platform, students are encouraged to reflect on their own habits and better understand how sleep impacts their wellbeing, cognitive performance, and academic success.

Transforming Learning Through Real-World Data

The Sleep Journal brings together the latest in sleep science and digital engagement. Students log their data daily over two 14-day periods throughout the semester, creating a meaningful record of their habits and trends. iyarn’s analytics then transform this data into clear, actionable insights for both students and educators.

This initiative is one of the first of its kind in Australia, and it’s already generating powerful insights. More than 2,500 nights of sleep data have been collected to date, revealing patterns such as average bedtime past midnight and average sleep durations of under 7.5 hours.

Dr. Jen Walsh, Director of UWA’s Centre for Sleep Science and leader of the unit, describes the partnership as “a game-changer.”

“By integrating real-world, student-driven sleep data into our learning framework, we are providing an enriched educational experience that will not only benefit our students but also set a precedent for other universities around the country,” said Dr. Walsh.

iyarn co-founders and UWA graduates Lockie Cooke and Chris Lawrence are proud to have collaborated with the university to bring the Sleep Journal to life for students.

It’s an honour to return to UWA and collaborate on a project that will empower students to better understand their sleep habits,” said Lockie. “Sleep plays a crucial role in mental and physical helath, and we’re excited to see how this journal can positively impact student wellbeing and performance.”

The integration of Sleep Journal into the curriculum is not only enhancing individual understanding, it’s also contributing to broader academic research into sleep science and student wellbeing.

The Future of Education: iyarn’s Role in Digital Learning Innovation

This collaboration is a clear example of how iyarn’s platform can uncover valuable insights, driving real-world impact on student learning. By integrating data-driven reflection and meaningful conversations into the curriculum, we’re proud to support UWA as leader in digital learning innovation. We look forward to continuing to explore how iyarn can transform education, fostering holistic growth and student wellbeing.
